Detailed illustration of Semi-Truck in the book Rus and Moose by Chuchu Wang

The story begins with a tense almost-accident that turns into an unexpected friendship between Rus, a long-haul truck driver, and Moose, who has never left his home in the Maine woods. From there, the book unfolds into a calm, sweet adventure as the two travel together from Maine to Florida.

Moose experiences everyday “firsts,” like eating pizza, navigating roads, and settling into the bunk of a semi truck, all of which will feel relatable and charming to young readers.

As an adult reader, I appreciated the way the story highlights the trucking profession and the quiet realities of life on the road. The friendship between Rus and Moose feels sincere and kind, showing children how connection can form between very different individuals. That message alone makes this book a lovely choice for shared reading.

That said, I found myself wishing the story went just a bit deeper in a few areas. I would have loved to learn more about semi trucks through the storyline—especially since the premise naturally lends itself to explaining how trucks work and what truck drivers do. A little more detail woven into the plot could have added an extra layer of learning for curious kids.

I also wished there had been more map details showing their journey from Maine to Florida. The image at the end of the story with the map is spectacular, leaving me wanting more. Visualizing where they were going and how far they traveled could have strengthened the sense of adventure and supported early geography concepts.

Overall, Rus and Moose is a beautifully illustrated picture book that celebrates friendship, exploration, and an often-overlooked profession. While I wanted more informational depth, especially around trucks and mapping the journey, the heart of the story shines through. It’s a comforting, visually rich read that young children will enjoy returning to—especially those who love vehicles, travel, and stories about unlikely friendships.

Illustrator Highlights

Chuchu Wang’s background as an award-winning illustrator shines throughout the book. Her use of color, loose florals, and thoughtful composition brings both the Maine woods and the open road to life in a way that feels accessible for young readers. The illustrations do more than support the text—they help tell the story, showing emotion, movement, and the growing friendship between Rus and Moose. It’s the kind of artwork that invites conversation and visual storytelling during read-alouds.
