Evergreen Tree Sensory Craft

Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year for sights and smells. From the neighborhood lights at night to the smells of cookies baking in the oven. This Preschool Christmas Tree craft idea combines the sense of smell, sight, and touch using dried seasonings such as oregano, dill, rosemary, parsley, and cilantro.

It is an easy to do craft for kids of all ages!

Lesson Objectives: Create an Evergreen Tree symbol with a variety of sensory materials.

Materials Needed for Evergreen Tree Craft Ideas

  • Paper
  • Glue
  • Paintbrush
  • Dried herbs

Directions for Evergreen Tree Craft

  1. Print or draw the outline of a Christmas tree.
  2. Cover the inside of the tree with glue.  Use a paintbrush to get a consistent thin coating.
  3. Encourage the child to decorate the tree with dried green herbs. The trunk can be decorated with a brown hued
  4. Discuss the colors, textures, and smells of each spice as the child adds them to the tree.

Activity Extensions:

This Evergreen Tree sensory craft activity would also work well at different times of the year. Have the child cut their sensory tree out and add it to a winter scene for a craft activity in January or February. Encourage them to draw forest animals to create a woodland habitat, bringing science into the creative exploration project as well.

Teacher Notes:

Contain messes by doing this Evergreen Tree Craft idea in a shallow bin or Tupperware container.

Thanks so much for this very green idea!! i “gave up” glitter this year (I’m the science teacher at my school, so I feel like I should set an eco-conscious example). This is a fun way to make a sensory Christmas tree!!

Fantastic – I love it as a "natural glitter". My kids would love to do this and great tip about using a tray

What a great way to use herbs that have been on the shelf too long. We also have a ton we dried from our garden over the summer.

Our kids would love to make a sensory tree and take in the wonderful scent. We have one who is especially oriented to his sense of smell and often determines what he likes and doesn't like by the scent.
