Dr. Seuss Sensory Play with Kinetic Sand

Celebrate your favorite Dr. Seuss books with your child using this idea for Dr. Seuss Sensory Play with Kinetic Sand.  You just need a few supplies and your child will be magically transported into the colorful imaginary world of Dr. Seuss.

This week we’re featuring Dr. Seuss for the weekly Virtual Book Club for Kids!  There are so many favorite Dr. Seuss books we couldn’t pick just one. One of my favorites is this collection of Dr. Seuss books that I think any home library should have. Two of my favorites are included in it which are The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham.

Dr. Seuss’s Beginner Book Collection
(Cat in the Hat, One Fish Two Fish, Green Eggs and Ham, Hop on Pop, Fox in Socks)

Take some time to enjoy the Dr. Seuss books in honor of Read Across America  on March 2nd, which is Dr. Seuss birthday too.  My little one enjoy creating this activity with me as we enter into the playful imagination of Dr. Seuss and all of his memorable characters.

If you do a quick stop by the Target Dollar Spot each year you can usually find a few items to add to the box that are Dr. Seuss inspired.  We grabbed a few stamps and erasers this year to add to our collection which prompted Dr. Seuss the sensory box. Here’s how you can set up your own!

Directions for Dr. Seuss Sensory Play Idea

1. Read a few of your favorite Dr. Seuss books. We were inspired by The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham, our two favorites. Did you know it’s Read Aloud Month? Join along 15 minutes a day!

2. Gather together a few Dr. Seuss themed items like Dr. Seuss Erasers or Dr. Seuss finger puppets.  You can even make your own with Dr. Seuss stamps . You could even make a quick scavenger hunt of the items for your child to make it even more memorable.

3. Create a base layer to your sensory box like Kinetic Sand , beads or even dry rice.

Dr. Seuss Sensory Play Invitation for Preschoolers

4. Combine the Dr. Seuss themed items with a few craft items in a large container.  I used the colors of red, white and blue as many associate those with Dr. Seuss’s book the Cat in the Hat.

5. Invite your child to play with the times as they explore the magical world of Dr. Seuss.  It’s a sensory invitation with language and hands on fun as they explore the Cat in the Hat or any of your favorite Dr. Seuss books.  You’ll find them retelling parts of the story again and again as they build their language skills and imagination.

Rhyming Words Sensory Bin inspired by Dr. Seuss

6. For older children you can add the rhyming words from the story to the Dr. Seuss Sensory Box to make a literacy activity too.  I’ve created a printable for you to use.  Click here to download and print.
