EASY D.I.Y. Fathers’ Day Gift that Kids Can Make

Looking for a meaningful gift idea? Create a Kid-Made Cinquain for an Easy Father’s Day Gift for Dad. A gift he’ll treasure from the kids.

My Dad is the best hands-on Dad and Grandpa. My husband is too! We are SO lucky to have men that are willing to takes us fishing, sharks tooth hunting with you, cook with us, and play!

He has taught me that the best things in life are the people you love. So when it comes time for a Father’s Day Gift, we would buy them the world.

But the reality is that they don’t need any material things – they need to know how much we love and adore them. Last year, we made t-shirts and the year before that pictures, but what to do for this year???

How can we remind them of all the fun we have had and tell them how much they mean to us?

The best gifts come from the memories we make with the people we love quote #fathersday

EASY D.I.Y. Fathers’ Day Gift that Kids Can Make

When my friend, creator of Today’s Little Ditty offered a cinquain poetry challenge, I knew just what to write mine about – MY DAD!

What is a cinquain

A cinquain is a classic form of poetry with 5 lines. The lines are made up of words based on their syllables; 2, 4, 6, 8, and 2 syllables.  I based my poem off an event with my Dad, using a photograph, not only as inspiration but also as an illustration.

shovels

scoop under rocks

sift through running water

ten fingers search for something sharp

shark tooth!

Turn your poem into a gift

I used Canva‘s Ultimate Breakfast Design to create an image with my poem on it.

Then, I uploaded the picture to Shutterfly and made him a magnet for his locker at work. I shipped the magnet directly to his house in another state.

For less than $10, I had a sweet little gift that will hopefully make him smile at the memories we have made together!

Then my wheels got turning….

Writing a cinquain for Fathers' Day - combining love and literacy!

Kid-Made Cinquain, Father’s Day Poetry for DAD!

I enjoyed writing and making the poem for my dad, so I thought the kids might for their dad too!

We have been talking about syllables, so this made for an awesome learning activity too!

Love + Literacy = AWESOME Fathers’ Day Gift

My four year old told me what to say and we filled in the lines for him. Counting syllables to make sure that it followed the pattern: 2, 4, 6, 8, 2.

We typed the poem out and printed it on a piece of white paper. He started drawing a picture of him and his dad while I helped my 7 year old type hers out.

The seven year old LOVED the concept and started to work right away.  She was extremely excited to type out her poem on her own and is working to illustrate it as well.

Here’s the format to try making your own Poem for Father’s Day.

Format for Writing a Cinquain

Line 1: One word (a noun, the subject of the poem)
Line 2: Two words (adjectives that describe the subject in line 1)
Line 3: Three words (-ing action verbs–participles–that relate to the subject in line 1)
Line 4: Four words (a phrase or sentence that relates feelings about the subject in line 1)
Line 5: One word (a synonym for the subject in line 1 or a word that sums it up)

Alternative Line 5 for older poets: Five words (a phrase or sentence that further relates feelings about the subject in line 1)

Dad Poetry for Fathers Day #EduSpin

I think the kids’ cinquains turned out quite well and can’t wait to see my husband read them on Father’s Day.

We are thinking of getting him a gift certificate to an ice cream shop to go with our poems so that we can continue to MAKE MEMORIES together because the best gifts in the world are not ones that we can buy from the store, but in the memories, we make with the people we love.
