This month we’re having fun with an activity inspired by the Cat in the Hat.  This Activity combines a little water play based off the character of the Fish in the story.

Grab a fish bowl and some plastic letters to encourage your child to learn the letter of the alphabet and some beginning word families.  Let’s get started!

Directions for Cat in the Hat Alphabet Sensory Game

1. Gather with your child the letters of the alphabet.  You can use plastic letters or you can create your own.

Here’s how we made our letter gems.

2.  Lay them out together in a row in ABC order verbalizing the letters and the sounds that they make.  Create an Alphabet play mat for them to match the letters onto.  We practiced first before we added water play to the activity.

3.  Place letters into the fish bowl

4. Allow your child to fill up the fish bowl with water.  We used a larger container and then used a measuring cup for kids  to pour the water into the fish bowl.  {Set up in a space that can get be get wet}

5. Using inspiration from the book, draw a fish to add your Fish to the Water Bowl.  Encourage your child to color the fish. {Alternative is to tape fish on the outside of the bowl & cover with contact paper}

Here’s a resource for Dr. Seuss Coloring Pages if you’d rather just print it out.

6. Encourage your child to find the letters in the fishbowl and place them onto the alphabet play mat to help work on letter recognition.  If you have a reader you could also have them place the letters onto rhyming books from the story.

This Cat in the Hat Alphabet Fishbowl Game will bring your child hours of fun focusing on so many things including fine motor skills, eye hand coordination and learning to recognize the letters of the alphabet.

Try it out this month for our Virtual Book club for Kids featuring this beloved book by Dr. Seuss.
