Celebrating Dot Day With the Book The Dot
One of our favorite illustrators is Peter H Reynolds, his artwork can be found in numerous popular children’s picture books. One of my most favorite which highlights creativity is called The Dot .
Grab a copy of The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds
As you read the book The Dot you’ll discover how with a simple, witty story and free-spirited illustrations, Peter H. Reynolds entices even the stubbornly uncreative among us to make a mark – and follow where it takes us. It inspired actually a whole movement about the book called International Dot Day on September 15ish.
You can sign up to join the fun and grab a free Dot Day Guidebook for celebrating. At it’s latest check there were 182 countries celebrating and over 16 Million people.

Kid Made Art Frame Inspired by The Dot
In the book Vashti’s teacher placing her dot in a special gold swirled frame behind her desk. We thought it might be fun to make our own art frame to highlight the artwork that my child creates in our house.
Then we can use these tips for storing Art Work digitally one it’s had it’s time in the spotlight. Here’s how we made our own Art Frame with my daughter.
Materials
- Dabber Dot Markers
- White Display Foam Board
- Razor Knife (Adults Only USE)
Directions
Making this kid friendly art frame is such an easy project and takes very little time until completion. Just take your white foam board of your desired dimension of frame and cut it out with a razor knife.
(This is an adult task and use caution around little fingers.)
We chose to do a swirly type frame to try to model after the frame in the book.
Next you simply encourage your child to “Make their Mark” just like in the story and use the Dabber Dot Markers to make a special design around the frame. Before we started I did talk a little bit with my 5 year old about spacing things about and allow room for white space too.
We plan to hand it up with a ribbon on my daughter wall in her bedroom to a special art display spot. Can’t wait to see what she brings home from school and what she makes after school to hang in it.
One of my favorite resources for exploring art with kids is Jean from The Artful Parent. Â Here’s her lesson about Circles inspired by The Dot.

Author and Illustrator Peter H Reynolds
We recently have been connecting with the author Peter H. Reynolds through his videos that were shared by KidLit.TV. {Watch Here} We discovered that we can watch them on youtube on our Smart TV . Which I’ll be honest we’ve not been using very much so I’m thrilled to know that our afternoons now can have a special time for watching StoryMakers and Ready Set Draw from KidLit.TV. We’ve been watching on our ipad or iphone which is fun too.
I’ve attached them below so you can watch here too and get to know more about Peter H. Reynolds.
Resources for Celebrating International Dot Day
Take a moment to watch with your child or even your class these videos featuring the talented Peter H. Reynolds. I’ve previewed them all so that I can assure you they are kid friendly versions to view.
My child’s favorite is the Ready Set Draw-ish from KidLIt TV. The artwork he makes live in front of the camera is inspiring and simply gorgeous at the same time.
Here’s how we set things up with our Smart TV to watch KidLit. TV on YouTube.
The kids had such fun seeing things happening in person with an author they love. Did you notice my pictures have their own art flair? I’ve been experimenting my own artwork a bit with the app called Prisma.
Here’s a few examples using the Candy Filter. Digital artwork brings things to a whole new level with our images. Have you tried it out yet?
