Kid Made Gifts: LED Holiday Luminary
My 9 year old was immediately drawn to the LED Holiday Luminary. She wanted to make one to give to her little brother.
“It would look nice on his dresser.” she said.
“PLUS, it has circuits and I really like to build circuits!” she added.
This holiday crate comes with all the supplies needed to create a LED light up a hand-etched acrylic disk.
The Tinker Crates are recommended for kids 9 and up, so the directions are a little more complicated. The projects require a little more fine motor ability and patience. If you are looking for a holiday crate designed for a younger child – keep scrolling down for information on the classic Kiwi Crate Holiday Crate.
Building the circuit is one of my daughter’s favorite things to do. She was so excited to flip the switch and when the light did not turn on, her face fell.
I watched as she checked her connections and re-flipped the on the switch. Still nothing.
Then I got the giggles.
“WHAT ARE YOU LAUGHING AT?” She steamed.
“Aren’t you forgetting something?” I questioned.
“No. The circuit is all there. I checked the connections and even re-taped the other side.” she explained.
“What about the battery?” I pointed.
OH.
She giggled too! Because your circuit needs an energy source!
She built the base and reinforced it with tape so it wouldn’t wobble.
Then, she invited her brother (she has 2) to make a design. He’s 6 so, this part of the activity was perfect for him to jump in and do.
They etched a snowman and a Christmas tree, so that the little guy will have two different choices for a holiday decoration on his dresser.
They wrapped it and gave it to him right away. There was no way they could wait until Christmas Day!
Kid Made Gifts: GLOWING SNOW GLOBE
Let it snow!
Let it snow!
Let it snow!
With this holiday crate, kids can make and give two globes. Each globe swirls with snow-like glittor and can be decorated with removable holiday-themed stickers. All the supplies are included in the crate!
My son has had an obsession with snow globes ever since I brought him home one after traveling with work.
His eyes light up when he sees them in the stores, so we knew exactly what crate to order him!
He wanted to make these for his sister!
We thought since there were two globes, then my littlest (he just turned 3) could help make one too.
The glitter was by far a hit.
I’m really NOT a glitter fan, so we took this project outside to do. If your weather doesn’t permit this, set out a drop cloth or newspaper under your work station to help contain the glitter.
I read the directions and the boys made the snow globes all on their own.
Swirling the glitter over and over was by far their favorite thing to do.
I appreciated that the stickers provided were removable As a parent, I really had to smile and talk about the scenes they were creating on their snow globes. It makes me ga ga when the penguins are upside down, trees are sideways and 10 stickers are stacked on top of each other. If the recipient wanted to move them around they could. It also makes for another little activity on another day.
Bonus – if your child makes the globe upside down and you don’t realize it until you are setting up the LED light, you can easily help them flip the snowman over so he isn’t standing on his head!
