Growing and Learning with Carrots

We’ve gathered a variety of activities—from planting carrots in the garden to making carrot-themed snacks and crafts. Whether you’re looking for a simple science experiment, a creative kitchen project, or a fun math lesson, these ideas will keep your child engaged while reinforcing the themes of patience and perseverance found in The Carrot Seed by Ruth Krauss

Carrots in the Kitchen

Carrot Playdough

We made homemade orange playdough as part of our carrot-themed fun! My 5-year-old helped find a recipe, write down the ingredients, and measure them out. Although our no-cook playdough didn’t work as planned, it became a great lesson in problem-solving as we adjusted and cooked it anyway. In the end, she loved seeing how we could make playdough orange!

More fun carrot-themed recipes to try:

  • Carrot Soup – by Delightful Learning
  • Carrot Pizza – by Hungry Happenings
  • Carrot Cheeseball – by Taste of Home

Reading, Writing & Science with Carrots

  • Writing Practice: Have your child write down the ingredients for your playdough or another carrot-themed recipe.
  • Retelling the Story: Encourage your child to retell The Carrot Seed in their own words.
  • Mini Carrot Book: Create a small book where your child can illustrate and describe the steps of growing a carrot.
Carrot Fraction Activity for Kids

  • Carrot Fact Families – Use small carrots or pictures of carrots to practice addition and subtraction.
  • Carrot Fractions – Cut real carrots into halves, thirds, or quarters to explore fractions in a hands-on way.
