Understanding Childhood Fears and Monsters

Have you ever wondered how monsters under the bed became a common childhood fear?

The reality is that fears are a normal, healthy part of childhood development. They help children learn to make sense of the world around them and develop coping skills to last a lifetime. Here are some tips for understanding kids fears.

Children between ages 3 and 8 have a growing awareness of death and their own vulnerability. They feel small and powerless in a big world that is sometimes confusing and frightening. On top of this, many children have vivid imaginations, which can contribute to their fears.

Monsters become a tangible symbol for everything that feels confusing, frightening, or threatening.

To help your child with their fears you can…

  • Begin by acknowledging your child’s fears
  • Encourage them to draw pictures of the monsters they imagine and to talk together about them
  • Help your child play with his fear through role play

Books can help with some of these feelings of fear for a child. We hope this monster books list helps.
