Top 10 Everyday Objects for Summer Learning and Fun

Summer time is here.  The kids are home and ready for fun!  We’re excited to be a host of the 2nd Annual School’s Out Top 10: A Summer Blog Hop Series.  Top Kid Bloggers all week long will be featuring top Activities to keep kids engaged and exploring during the summer and perhaps sneak in a little learning!  Last year we shared 10 Top Books to Cook with Kids.  This year we’re having fun with things that you’ll find around the house.

One way we love exploring and creating is with everyday objects around our house during the summer.  It’s amazing to see what can happen with Rocks, Shells, Lids and Sticks when given the opportunity to explore. Take a moment throughout your day to find random objects that you could use to play and learn with!  Keep in a special location so that all summer long your child have a place to go to to grab and use as needed.

Here are a few things to consider keeping in a collection spot this summer:

Reusable Items

  • Lids
  • Styrofoam
  • Cardboard
  • Cereal Boxes
  • Egg Carton
  • Jars
  • Paper Rolls
  • Shoeboxes

Everyday Kitchen Items

  • Funnel
  • Muffin Tin
  • Colander
  • Straws
  • Popsicle Sticks
  • Measuring Cups

Nature items

  • Rocks
  • Shells
  • Sticks
  • Seeds

Household Items

  • Glass Gems
  • Small items for sorting & counting
  • Large Plastic Container
  • Small Containers
  • String or ribbon
  • Plastic Beads
  • Water Beads
Once you’ve gathered your items it’s time for exploration and creation.  Allow for them to be accessible during appropriate times for your child and for you.  As you explore items you’ll discover there are so many ways to use them for learning tools too. Here are our Top Activities featured on The Educators’ Spin On it using everyday Items.

Cute ideas! We might have to give the ABC Straw game a try. We love creating with baby food jars and making TP roll crafts 🙂
