Apple Tree Craft
Do you know the song Way Up High in the Apple Tree? This is a playful craft idea that plays on the movement portion of the song. Your child’s doing to have tons of fun painting with marbles, which we’ll call our apples in this activity. You just need a few items to create this apple tree craft with your preschooler and lots of movement. Here’s how…

- White Paper
- Recycled Shoebox Lid
- Brown Paper
- Green Paint
- Buttons or Pompoms
- Glue
- Scissors
- Baby wipes (to keep the mess all tidy if needed)

Directions for Apple Tree Craft:
1. Sing the song Way Up High in the Apple Tree and read one your your favorite Apple Stories with your child. One of my favorites to read is The Apple Pie Tree.
2. Next is to have some fun with the rolling apples, which we’re calling our marbles for this project. Add plain white paper onto a recycled box lid and a few drops of green paint.
3. Now add the marbles, we added five just like the song, and then move the apples around the box to color the sheet of paper all green. It takes some fine motor skills and eye hand coordination to do this, which is perfect for preschoolers. TIP: Head outdoors if you can for any flying marbles to land on the grass in stead of your carpet.
* We alway keep baby wipes on hand for messes when painting too.
4. Allow the paint to dry after painted with the marbles. Might be a good time to go make apple pie together. Here’s our recipe for kids to make. Or one of our other apple activities featured here.
5. Use scissors to cute out the shape of an apple tree For younger kids you could draw a shape with them on the back to a guide to follow. Or you can simply cut out yourself with younger children who aren’t able to follow a line yet. My daughter is 5 and was able with guidance to cut hers out by herself.
6. Then give your child brown paper to cute out the tree trunk of your apple tree. or if you want ot get even fancier you could use a recycled paper roll to make it stand. Glue on to the green tree outline.
7. The final step is to add apples onto the tree. We had some old red buttons in our button box that I had my daughter search through to find for a sorting activity. Then she attached them to the tree with a glue stick for a fine motor activity.
For the holiday season, use this technique to make your own marble-painted Christmas tree.
Variation: You could simply paint red dots with finger prints for the apples or glue on pompoms like you see in this apple harvest post.
Now you have an apple tree as you welcome fall! If you can head out in your community to an apple picking farm and pick apples with your preschooler. Here’s a video of how to harvest apples that your child might enjoy too.
