Book Summaries of our September Book List

Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes

Chrysanthemum thinks her name is absolutely perfect—until her first day of school. “You’re named after a flower!” teases Victoria. “Let’s smell her,” says Jo. Chrysanthemum wilts. this story takes you through the journey of learning to be proud of your name and all that it stands for as a child.  A must read at the beginning of the school year.  Plus a fun introduction to the popular children’s author Kevin Henkes who your child will love the rest of his books and the precious characters and storylines he creates.

Mouse Count by Ellen Stoll Walsh

In this adorable companion to Mouse Paint, the beloved author Ellen Stoll Walsh introduces the concept of counting forward and backward in a suspenseful story that will keep young readers guessing with tiny mice and one big hungry snake.  A perfect series to begin teaching your preschooler beginning concepts of counting, shapes and colors.

Ten Red Apples by Pat Hutchins

The playful play on words draws young readers in with “Ten red apples hanging on a tree. Yippee, fiddle-dee-fee!” But they are not there for long. All the farm animals including a Horse, cow, donkey, pig, hen each eat one. “Save one for me,” calls the farmer. But what about the farmer’s wife?

How I Became a Pirate by Melinda Long

Caldecott Honor-winning illustrator David Shannon teams up with witty storyteller Melinda Long for a hilarious look at the finer points of pirate life. When Braid Beard’s pirate crew invites Jeremy Jacob to join their voyage, he jumps right on board. Buried treasure, sea chanteys, pirate talk; who wouldn’t go along? Until he finds out what pirates don’t do: No reading bedtime stories, no tucking kids in… Maybe being a pirate isn’t so great after all. A fun story for your little pirate!

We’re Going on a Leaf Hunt by Steve Metzger

As you open the pages of this colorful fall story, you discover there are lots of beautiful fall leaves to find! In this story three friends have a big adventure hiking over a mountain and through a forest to collect leaves of all kinds and colors. What will they do with all their leaves at the end of the story? A playful introduction to fall leaves with easy rhyming text and fun sound effects for preschoolers and toddlers.

Hey. Reading aloud, a person learns not only diction, but also improves the intonation of speech, its brightness and emotional coloring, which makes it easier and more accurate to express thoughts, eliminating parasitic words and other speech defects. It’s difficult for some people to choose the words that are most expressive and appropriate to the situation and that express feelings and thoughts most clearly. Reading aloud contributes to the development of a smooth speech that draws attention to the interlocutor, an increase in vocabulary, memory development and human literacy.
