Creating Hope with your Child

Discover heartfelt moments and practical tips in this inspiring collection of parenting stories focused on intentional, purposeful living with your children.

Our Snapshot of Parenting with Purpose is about a whole group of creative bloggers who decided to join together to support and make a difference by forming a team, created by MaryAnne of Mama Smiles,  to support the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving work in research, education, advocacy, and patient services.  There is more HOPE than ever for people facing cancer.

Together they created Small Hands Creating Hope, a special book full of Child Created Crafts to help foster Hope in Cancer Patients.

Week by week I watched as each of the 40+ bloggers shared little stories about why they decided to join this project and also shared how cancer has affected their lives. Here’s my story.

I couldn’t help but notice that they were all instilling Hope and Encouragement into their children’s lives just by simply showing them how to care for and encourage HOPE in others. I observed how they taught their child that they too can make a difference in someone’s life, even at such a young age. I am in true admiration of each of these participants and how they created hope, smiles and love into their homes, children’s lives and local cancer treatment centers.

I asked some of the participants to share why they had chosen to participate in Small Hands Creating Hopeand here are a few of their responses.

  • This project was huge for me – my kids have the joint legacy of a mother who survived cancer and a grandfather they never met because of cancer. I want them to see that there is hope for the future, and that there is always a way to make a difference.

MaryAnne at Mama Smiles created a Hand Sewn Felt Butterfly

  • I wanted my child to be a part of this special project as it was a good way to introduce to her the fact that her grandfather has cancer but that we always have hope. Teaching her the importance of giving to others and understanding that we don’t always have to give big to make a difference. Just bringing a smile to someone’s face is sometimes the most important thing. 🙂

Deborah at Learn with Play at Home created Sunny Potted Flowers

  • My son and I made our project for my dad, a two time cancer survivor. For me, it was about bringing joy to my dad through something his grandson’s hands created.

Trisha at Inspiration Laboratories created a Handmade Plantable Paper Butterfly Card

  • My children are grown now, but the project was still very special to me. I loved creating something other parents could do with their children for young cancer patients. Both my parents are cancer survivors, and I wanted to participate in honor of them and in gratitude to the American Cancer Society. My parents were very moved to receive the gift of the print book I ordered for them. My mom plans to make my project, a butterfly counting book, with her great-grandkids!

Deb at Living Montessori Now created a Counting Book with Printable & Hope Quotes

  • I wanted JDaniel to help create something that would be a gift and a wonderful place to hold cards he would create for others.

Deirdre at JDaniel4’s Mom created a Handmade Ribbon Basket

  • I lost a very dear one to cancer. This project gave me an opportunity to remember her and share her little story with my daughter.

Mansi at Experimenting Mom created a Tree of Hope

  • I embrace any opportunity to sit and chat with my girls about my mother, who passed away 3 years ago from colon cancer. This project gave us a chance to dive into a creative project that reflected my mom’s and my daughters’ love of books. I also loved switching our perspective and focusing on cancer survivorship.

Jennifer at Kitchen Counter Chronicles created a special Handmade Book

  • I lost my Dad to cancer last year so I was on board as soon as MaryAnne announced her idea for the project. Last year was a very stressful and confusing time for my son with lots of visits to the hospital and then losing his “Opa” so this was a chance to do something hopeful and positive together.

Adrienne Weeks at The Iowa Farmers Wife who created a Suncatcher Cross

  • My grandfather passed away from cancer just a few months before my first child was born. I try to make him as much a part of their lives as possible, each one of them named after him in some way. We talk often of him and at night before bed discuss what good & bad things he may have seen us do that day and what we can do better tomorrow to make sure he’s sees more good than bad. My children are still young and have a difficult time grasping the gravity of something like cancer, but they can easily understand how helping others makes people happy, how gratifying it is to create something that makes others smile. How if someone is sick or hurting, the right thing to do is to help, however you can. It feels good to them to know their guardian angel is up there, smiling down on them when they do good deeds like these.

Stacy at Kids Stuff World  created a  Butterfly Garland and a Special Stepping Stone

40+ Bloggers joined together for this cause with their children, working side by side teaching them about how to inspire HOPE in cancer patients and survivors. For more inspirational stories you can visit the other participants {Click HERE} . I hope that you will consider purchasing a Small Hands Creating Hope Book.

For me one of the reasons I decided to participate in the project is that I’ve wanted to find something for many of my friends who are going through cancer themselves, their spouses, their parents and a child.  As I reach out to them I wanted to find something for their children to give them power and control of their temporary situation.  I found that this project can be a part of that support.

If news comes that a loved one has been diagnosed with cancer we look for ways of helping, especially when it’s a parent or family member we are concerned about how it will impact the children involved too.  I encourage you to think about sending this book with the craft materials needed for a few of the projects to a family going through cancer treatments.  The projects in Small Hands Creating Hope have been created from very simple art supplies that fit into a family budget.  Imagination Soup even shared how Art Therapy can be a great way to help a child through the emotions they are feeling during this challenging time. So we’re sending a few books as  LOVE BOOKS package to our friends to inspire HOPE in their homes.  Just a simple way to give a child and family the tools to create HOPE, it just might be special thing the need during this time.

Sending messages of Hope and Love!

The Importance of Daddy Reading

Discover the lasting impact of reading with Dad in this heartfelt post. Explore how shared storytime strengthens bonds, boosts literacy, and creates meaningful memories.

The Importance of Reading with Dad

The Importance of Daddy Reading Time for Kids

When a dad takes the time to read to his child, something powerful happens. Beyond building early literacy skills, these shared moments create a special bond that supports emotional growth, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning. A father’s voice, presence, and attention during storytime show a child they are valued—and that reading is something to be enjoyed together

This week’s Snapshot of Parenting with Purpose was inspired by Deb at Learn with Play.  She shared with us her husband and how much she knows it’s important for him to be involved with story time too.

She writes to us, “I believe that in order for kids (especially little boys) to develop the best relationship with books and literature for the future, it’s important that they have Daddy (or other males) read too.

Myself and my husband have both made it a priority to read to our kids daily since they were born and love to see the excitement and enthusiasm that books hold for our daughter.

As a teacher I know all too well that boys are typically less inclined to read of their own free will and even less so, the older they get. Hopefully by creating a literacy-rich environment as well as showing our son not only the wonder and joy that books hold, but also that males love reading too, he will also develop the same relationship with reading and literature as his older sister.

And… for all the Dads out there, there’s not much more that melts a mum’s heart, than seeing Daddy reading with the kids.” Debs @Learn with Play

Our Spin On It

We love when Dads get involved with their child’s reading, when both parents are actively involved and working together for the children amazing things can and will happen.  As a father, having your child observe you reading and listening to you read stories is a key element to lifelong successful readers.

Research has shown time and time again that children who are read to frequently before the enter Kindergarten will have higher vocabulary skills, will become better readers and have better academic success. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends reading aloud to all children over the age of six months.

For best results, read to your child every day for at least 30 minutes. How do you plug in reading for 30 minutes?  It’s definitely something that both parents have to do together to make sure it happens!

Here are some fun ways we’ve shared discovered to encourage you child to have books in their daily routine and in a fun way.

  • Tips on Reading with an Active Baby or Toddler
  • Creating book stations
  • Front Facing Bookcase
  • Love Books Exchange
  • LOVE BOOKS page filled with Books and Activities
  • Ten Ways to Get Boys Reading  by Dr. Danny Brassel

Last week we shared a story about a father actively engaged in their sons every moments and purposely doing special projects together. It’s so important for your children to see both parents working together to provide these opportunities. I know some of the biggest complaints is not enough time. Here are a few reading spots that are favorites and some spots you might not have thought of.

Where can you read together?

  • reading corner
  • kitchen table
  • highchair
  • bathtub
  • playground
  • parent pick up line
  • bed
  • chair
  • backyard under a tree
  • library
  • front porch or backyard porch
  • siblings practice time
  • tent indoors or outdoors
  • pretend boat
  • restaurant waiting for a table or food
  • car, bus, metro, train
  • on a road trip
  • on a airplane
  • at the airport
  • online video chat with grandparents or other family members
How many Places Can You Read?

Here’s a Printable Checklist for you too!

 All Families are Unique

On are different note… we know that all homes are unique and that there are single parents too.  It is totally possibly for any parent to do this on their own too.  If there is a way, involving a grandfather or uncle at times as an option that might be helpful too if you’re concerned.   They most important thing is that books need to be in your child’s life from the very beginning and that your child needs and adult to read and read and read with them to become successful readers and great thinkers!   Something to think about….sometimes a special book could be a good transition item from home to home for little ones too.

We LOVE BOOKS!

This is a lovely post. So happy to be a part of it.
I'm so glad that you included the part about every family being different. Reality is that there are many families that don't have a "daddy" to read with. I hope in these circumstances that there are other males present in the children's life such as grandfathers, uncles, friends, teachers etc who can share reading experiences with the children.

Thank you for including me in such a valuable post.

    Debs 🙂

(PS- the 2nd pic doesn't seem to be working 😉 )

What a wonderful post!! My husband reads to my son every night and I completely agree that boys need to hear their dads read too!! People always talk about how important moms are….and we are…but the influence that a "dad" can have on a child can be life changing!!

Snapshots of Parenting with Purpose

Our children get report cards. Employees get reviews. As parents you may not get feedback from others on your parenting. We would like to take some time here at The Educators’ Spin On It to celebrate the moments you share with your children that deserve recognition. We would like to give you positive feedback on your parenting experiences and share your story with others for inspiration!

From our family and friends to our neighbors and the people we see in our community there are so many fantastic role models and good examples of what parenting can be. Often the media reflects upon the worst moments of parents.

We would like to take a moment of our time to celebrate the little things that make the difference in their lives of our children.

We want to hear about, promote, and celebrate all of you parents out there who are parenting with purpose!

Look around you at the world. Who is inspiring you to be a better parent? Is it your own dad who made a special trip to help you fix a leaky bathroom faucet? Is it your neighbor who is parenting two young children, one who just had a shunt put in his brain? Is it the stranger walking into a grocery store who stops for a moment and kisses his child, snuggled in a carrier close to his chest?

If you could take a snapshot of a great parenting with purpose moment, what would it look like for you? You don’t have to actually catch this moment on camera, but we sure would love to hear about it! Please send us your story of the grandparent, neighbor, friend, family, spouse, or community member that you saw parenting with purpose.  If you have a picture that represents that moment and don’t mind sharing it with us, send us that too! (but not necessary at all!)

We would love to feature you in a future blog post and inspire the word to be better parents! E-mailing us your snapshot of parenting with purpose gives us permission to share your story with others with hopes that it may inspire. If you do not want us to share your awesome parenting moment with others, but want to tell us, just let us know in your e-mail and we will read it, but not share it!
